today we talk about

Export Audio Mixdown in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today we'regoing to talk about exporting our audioin Cubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe content navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate web page with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there if you're working withprograms like wavelab or qbas plugins orthe cable gu shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started so this Beginsthe topic of exporting the audio atmixdown and what that means is we'vecreated our work of art we got our songall together the way we want it and nowwe have to bring it out of Cubase toeither be uploaded to a streamingservice or played on any device that wehave or any of the things involved inthat process and when we do that we windup looking at this screen which is theexport audio mix down screen so let'sback out of this for a minute we have asong in front of us with our tracks allready to go mix the way we want it thefirst thing we have to do is set theseleft and right locators an easy way todo that is just select all your tracksand hit the letter P that'll put thelocators around whatever you've selectedthere's a number of other ways to do itwe'll just go with that premise for nowand then we have to go up to file downto the option that says export the topoption says audio mixdown I select thatoption now I'm in this screen and here'sall our options what do we choose what'sthe best way to go here let's talk aboutall this stuff so our first set ofoptions options up here it says singleand then it says multiple if you choosesingle you can pick one thing out ofthis list want it to come from thestereo outputs any the various channelsor tracks that you have in your projectwhatever you check it uncheckseverything else that you had so you canonly pick one thing in the singlecategory if you go to the multiple tabnow you can pick as many of these as youwant and you can check and uncheckdifferent kinds of groups of things inany combination that you want and thenyou go from there so for example wechoose the single and we take the stereoout we're going to get one mix whatcomes through the stereo track whatcomes through the stereo outputs andthat's it we get one thing we go tomultiple maybe we want the drum mix andthe bass maybe some vocals we want toexport all three of those at the sametime then you can do things in themultiple category if you're looking atyour project they're overwhelmed withall the various choices that you haveyou can expand or collapse these optionsstart opening them up the way you wantor you can select the whole groups ofthese things you have the option to syncwhatever you select to what's ever inthe project if I turn this on I go to myproject and I select the Bas track thebase track is then selected over here inmy mixdown I switch it to the kick thenthe kick is selected if I choose thebass and the kick then both the Basseand the kick are selected up here aswell that option is only available ifyou're on the multiple tab if yourproject has 40 tracks in it and you'relooking for something specific like thelead vocal you can actually go up to thesearch option and type in what you'relooking for then you'll get optionsbased on whatever you type in there inyour channel list you get various kindsof op icons and clues as to what you'reseeing shows the color of the track overon the right you can see whether it's astereo or a mono track all right so Ihave four trackshere let's look at some of our renderingoptions above here I have the locatorset covering all four bars I can selectany track then render my export audioscreen and the next area we have here isthe export range we have two choices wecan choose the locators or we can choosecycle markers let's stay with locatorsfor a minute I go back up to the channelselection and I have single againdepending on what I've chosen I'm goingto render one single track stay with thestereo output there's an option overhere that says after export you canchoose to create audio tracks let's gofor that option and then export theaudio that point we get a brand newstereo track it's a full mix down of ourothertracks and delete that track if we dothe same thing but this time we go tomultiple say I choose the Bass track andthe kick track I keep it on locators Iexport the audioit now gives me two new tracks if I soloit one of them is the Bass track otherone is the kicktrack so you can choose to mix yourtracks or export them individually andthen you have this option with the cyclemarkers I go back up to one of my markertracks created a cycle marker andduplicate it another three times I'mgoing to open up my markers track andgive these some names I'll call thefirst one an intro a verse third oneI'll call A Chorus last one I'll call anendingdo the same thing I've been doing openup the export audio screen down in theexport range I have the locators or thecycle markers if I hit cycle markers Inow can choose any of these cyclemarkers for my intro my chorus my verseor my ending let me take all of them Icheck each one of them off I'm going togo back to the single tab I'm going toexport and then it renders off thosefour sections asmixes if I remove all of those let's doit one more time but this time I'm goingto go back to the multiple choice I'mgoing to leave the base and the kickchecked the cycle markers checked I'mgoing to export myaudio again this time it rendered offthe cycle marker ranges but instead of amix I got individual tracks on eachcycle marker you can come up with somepretty elaborate renders depending onwhat tabs you check so here's one youmay or may not be using or be familiarwith let's open up the audio export asyou look towards the bottom you see somethings down here but there's somethingcalled the export q and you may not evenrealize that you can open this up thelittle triangle and now we have a wholeseries of options to set up individualjobs so for example if you want to makemultiple renders of something you don'twant to have to keep opening this windowup and repeating the job say for examplego to the single Tab and initially Iwant to do a stereo render so I checkthat now I come down to my export queand I say add it to the queue and itputs the job in here then let's say Iwant to go back and make a render of mykick drum so I hit that come down andsay add it to the queue maybe I had agroup in here somewhere I come up tothat I click on it I say add it to thequeue you get the idea I could just keepgoing through this and creating as manyjobs as I want for now I'm going to saygo ahead and create the audio track andthen I just hit render like I normallydo although it has changed to sayingstart the Q export I hitthat I had green progress bars gothrough let me know each job wascompleted and I go back to my projectand I now have three new tracks createdfrom those audio renders so now we moveon to this area that's called the filelocation most of the demonstration I'vebeen just creating extra audio tracksbut of course most of the time you'regoing to render your files to some otherarea some other folder or hard drive thefirst thing you want to do is make sureyou name it it starts out here and saysUntitled pretty much my common andfavorite option is to go to the dropdown arrow hit the option that says setit to the project name that way whateverI've been titling my project it justautomatically fills that in if I go astep further there's an option that saysauto update the name if you're going tomaking a series of these kind of rendersit'll put the number one two three orwhatever you want after each render nextto that you have this little gear thatopens up the naming schemes we're goingto come back to this in a minute becausethere's a bit to discuss on this areathe next option is the path here's whereyou're actually going to render yourfile to whatever folder on your harddrive you've got a drop down that saysthe path options the first option is tochoose this just opens up your fileexplore allows you to pick out whateverfolder you want to save it to you canuse the project audio folder every timecub makes a project it creates an audiofolder and so you can choose that optionyou can go to the project mixdown folderthis is just a convenient folder thatqbase automatically makes for you andcalls it mixdown you have folderlocations that you use all the time itkeeps a running list of some of yourrecent folders and if this gets too longyou want to clear it out there's anoption to clear the recent paths you getthe preview area here shows you how yourfile is going to look a lot of this isbased on this naming scheme option andthen you have the conflicts area you canchoose it to always ask you if there's aconflict create a unique name or alwaysoverwrite it always ask means it'll giveyou a dialogue and you'll choose whatyou want to do create a unique namemeans it'll rename it if it needs to andalways overwrite means exactly thatit'll just always overwrite your filesthen next up we have this area that saysthe file format first up we have theoption to save a preset which is a niceoption in case you want to makedifferent configurations for example youcan move down to the sample rate you canchoose different sample rates differentbit depth you can decide if you want tosplit the channels mono down mix or ifyou get into the surround sound you canexport every single channel from thesurround and then you can save those aspresets change the measure eat themquickly you have the option to insert abroadcast wave chunk this is just anoptional piece of information that goesinto the wave files that may come up invarious broadcasting situations I'm notsure how important or valuable that maybe to the common home user but if youhave a use for that then you can checkthat option if you hit the little geartells you what that information isbasically embeds the date and the timeand actually this is something thatcould be on the one hand beneficial onthe other hand it could be somewhatdetrimental some applications may not beable to use or run with this broadcastwave chunk basically if you don't thinkyou're going to need it might want tojust leave it unchecked you have theoption to insert the IM XL chunk thisholds information that you may have setup in your project saying who the authoris or what the project name is you havethe option to insert Tempo definition Ithis is only available if you put thisfirst option of the XML Chunk in herebasically this records your Tempo trackif you have one you have the option tochoose the wave extensible format thiscomes into play when you have certainspeaker configurations that you want tosave if you don't want to save those youwould check this and then your lastoption to don't use the rf64 compliantfile format checking this just makesyour file compatible with older fileplayers and you have these other optionsin the middle here the first one sayseffects typically you'll notice this isgray out and you can't do anything to itthis only comes alive if you go up andhit the multiple tab up here in theupper left once you do that along withchoosing your multiple outputs likewe've talked about then you can decidealso how you want effects recorded youcan disable them you can have the groupsand the sends or you can have the mastergroups and sends and then we come tothis option that says after the exportthis is an additional option to whereyou send this up here in the folder inother words you send your files to somefolder up here you want things backed upinto once those things have been sent tothat folder you have a bunch of ofoptions by this drop down number one youcan tell it to do nothing you canactually have it uploaded to SoundCloudyou can have it create a new project youcan do like we've been doing throughthis demonstration have it create audiotracks which then basically just opensthem up in the project you're working onyou can have them sent to the pool thisoption says insert into the pool and ifyou pick that option you actually can goover and create another folderspecifically in the pool where you wantit but then you have this other optionif you've never seen this before I justwant to share it with you that allowsyou to open things up in wave laab ifyou don't know what wavelab is it'sanother Steinberg program it's wellknown as being a mastering program butit really is an audio everything programthere are so many things you can do inwave laab that are specific to wave laabI know if there's another program outthere quite like it but for those thathave never seen this let me show youwhat this option does choose the optionthat says open in wavelab Pro I'm goingto go ahead and perform an export audiolike I would if I was backing up myfiles it begins to open up wavelab andin a few seconds you now have the wavelab program opened with whateverrendered audio that you set up in Cubaseand in this case it's just a stereo mixof the song but we have the ability toopen up individual tracks or any kind ofmix configuration that you've donedifferent kinds of groups the list justgoes on and on of what you could do onceyou have it into wavelab the wavelabinterface allows you to basically zoomout to that full project view where youcan begin to either master your song orany number of other editing options youwant to go through the way they've builtthat into the option you do an audio mixdown that you can then send it on towavelab basically what they've createdis a complete from start to finishoption for your audio in other words youcan completely create it in qbase fromthe very beginning and then you canbring it into wave lab to do that finalfinishing touch before you send it outinto the world it's just a greatcompliment to each other if you've neverseen wave Lab at some point you may wantto investigate what that world is allabout turning back to qbase that leavesjust these bottom options this one onthe far right says deactivate externalmedia inputs if you have something likethat hooked up with external effects youcan check the option for realtime exportthis is a good option if sometimes theprocessor load or your effects are justtoo heavy probably other times wherethis is good but basically it then playsback the project in real time takeslonger to export but allows you to putsome difficult things together you havethe option to update the display in caseyou want to check the meters as this isdoing the render and then you can keepthe dialogue open with this option evenafter you've done your export the onlyother thing to look over in this screenwe just quickly passed over before if wego back up to the name area when we'recreating the name for our project we hitthis little gear brings up the namingscheme this is quite a useful and uniqueoption you're given to really go intodepth in terms of creating names foryour projects the main thing tounderstand if you want to use this lookfirst in this middle area that shows theresult and in this area you have theselittle information boxes that appearthose are taken from this area abovethat says attributes Little X if I wantto close them out of here now there'snothing here at that point I can go tothis attribute area I can either doubleclick on these or I can drag them intothis field as I drag these into thefield this determines how the songs willbe named and at the very bottom you geta preview so you have some idea what theresult is so right now if I drag thename in my project has a name it's goingto give me that first off if I go overto the channel number and I click onthat and drag it in if there's a channelnumber it's going to show that here if Ihave a project name I can come over andclick on that and drag it in and thenit's going to show the project namebelow all this it says separator andright now it has a little Dash you canchange this to a backward slash or alittle star symbol or whatever you wantyour words to be separated by and thenyou end up with this preview showing thewords and the dashes and all thedifferent categories that you want backin the attributes on this option thatsays free text you can actually doubleclick on this and then once it's in theresult you can click on it and actuallytype in whatever text you want there Casthere's some information separate thatnone of these other categories coverultimately you can come up and you cansave that as its own naming scheme youcan get back to it quick if you need youcan add numbers to the name if you wantto categorize things that way all in alla very useful tool for those situationswhere you need to really go into depthon how you name your projects or filesand that's going to wrap it up for todayas always if you haven't already be sureto grab your copy of the digital audiomanual content navigation guide from thelink below this video it's a fasterbetter way to learn and review pick itup look it over all the different topicsthat are gathered there and then you twocan get started on your path to a betterway to learn all this stuff so we took atour and looked at the audio mixdowndialogue in cuase we started off bysetting our locators we looked at theexport screen we saw the differencebetween the locators and then usingcycle markers we got into the hiddenoption of the export que we talked aboutwhere the file locations and where theygo what happens after the export then wedove in and looked at the naming schemeoptions and we will continue to look atall these different features andfunctions in qase as always it's greatto have you guys here and I'll see youon the nextvideo
