Batch Renaming in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout batch renaming in wavelab Pro butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we've been talking aboutbatch processing for quite a few videosand all those videos as usual with allthe videos on this channel that are inthe navigation guide in the link belowbut when we come to the topic of thebatch renaming which is a powerful setof features in wavelab there's some keyConcepts that if you understand thenyou're able to attack just aboutanything you want to achieve so thefirst thing you want to understand isthere's basically three paths laid outin wavelab for the batch renaming andthose three paths are to rename filesthey are to rename markers and they areto rename clips and among those threeoptions there's some similarities andthere's some differences but if you havethat in your mind first that you'regoing to be dealing with either filesmarkers or Clips then you'll have somekind of strategy of where to go fromthere so let me show you how they'resimilar and how to get to each one ofthose options pretty quick let's say wehave a group of files in a folder and wewant to rename them what we're going towant to do is go up to our file tab comedown to the option that says tools andin that tab we have a subcategory at thebottom called batch renaming and thisopens up a dialogue and this is what iscommon between our different options offiles markers and clips is that we'regoing to get this dialogue and thisdialog consists of three different pagesthe first one being the target whereyou're going to kind of choose whateverthings you're going to affect you havean option to hit next that takes you tothis operation page which basically youlay out what you're going to do to yourtarget files and then the third pagewhen you hit it brings you up a previewwhere you're going to actually see theresultslet me close out of this for a minutelet's say we're going to deal withmarkers so the first thing we want to dois go to our markers Tab and we're goingto look now for the functions optionshere and as we move down this list wealso have the option that says batchrenaming if I click on that once againthis dialog screen opens up with aTarget screen with an operation screenand finally with a preview screen thedifference is that with this set ofdialogues it's specifically gearedtowards markers and it gives you all theoptions to attack the different markersand how to choose them where everythingbefore was dealing with files noweverything is dealing with markers soyou can see that we get these samedialogues but each one is customized tothe different thing we're looking forwhether it be files markers or Clipslet's cancel out of this for a minutelet's go to our final option let's go upto our Clips tab same thing let's goover to functions as we move down thelist we have an option for once againbatch renaming but this time our Targetdeals with Clips all different kinds ofof options for choosing our Clips we goto our next operations screen and thenwe come to our final preview screen soif you have that concept down then youkind of have an idea of what wavelab iscapable of doing and what its focus isin terms of looking at files markers andClips in terms of doing your batchrenaming operations now the next conceptthat you want to get a handle on is whathappens on this second screen again onthe first screen we get to choose whatwe're looking for we have all theseoptions especially with the clips allthe clips the clips on the active trackonly the selected clips clips ofspecific names I mean you have all kindsof options what you're trying to pickbut for Simplicity I'm just going to sayall the clips so I'll leave it on thatgo to the next screen but here's thething you want to get a handle on inthis operation screen and it's theconcept or the idea of the category andthe type if you look over here on theright you have these drop down lists andone says category and one says type ifyou go to the first category option youhave various choices in this case itsays remove or convert or insert importcertain things or find and replacecertain things and below it you havethis type drop down list in this case ithas all these different options herewell the thing that you want tounderstand is that when you change yourcategory you also change all the optionsthat you have available in the type forexample if we stay on this insertcategory and I look at all these optionsin the type I have nothing or counter orspecific text or part of the originalname or all these different choices butif I go pick up the category and Ichange that to say remove in other wordsall the choices in the type have nowchanged and each one of these do that ifI go to the convert option in thecategory now I have all kinds of optionsin the convert type to take the find andreplace option at the bottom the typegives me just some basic choices as youmake these choices in your categorieslet's go back to remove for a minuteover here on the left you have theserenaming operations which tell youexactly what you've chosen both thecategory and the type right now overhere on the right my category saysremove and my type says all over on theleft it says remove and all it reflectsexactly what's chosen over here on theright and if I change that and I canjust spin my mouse to make these changesonce I go to the insert option over onthe left it is now changed to insert andcounter and then the next thing to drawyour attention to is you actually get apreview down here on the bottom of whatkind of is going on so for example thisone says insert counter when I look hereat the bottom it shows the originalwhich in this case is blank or it's justgoing to be whatever the words are buton the right it shows two little zerosbecause it's going to show you how it'sadding a counter to whatever ouroriginal text was in fact if we just goa step further and hit next we actuallyget this exact preview because I havethese six different clips and it showshere that now these clips although theyretain the name of empty because that'sall I call them they now are preceded bythis counter of one two three four fiveand Etc so you actually get this finalresult here so you know what you'redealing with now let's go back the nextthing to understand is that here's whereit starts to get very sophisticated interms of what you can achieve whenyou're trying to rename things you startoff with just a basic renaming operationthat's what you choose when you do yourcategory and type but guess what you canadd multiple levels of this kind ofrenaming by coming up here and hit thisplus buttonit starts all over again in other wordsnow I can go over and I can choose adifferent category let's say I want toconvert this with this type of to lowercase and then I have a different set ofoperations here and each one of theseoperations have to be carried out soit's going to go through this first setand the second set and guess what I canjust keep adding operations I mean atypical example is I can have the firstone say remove all the information sofor each one of my files or Clips ormarkers any kind of information that'salready in there it'll wipe it out thenI can create a second operation thatsays now rename them to this specificthing and it'll go through each one ofthose and rename those and then I cancome down and say insert some specificstuff to that and that should allow youto get some idea of just how deep thiscan go in terms of not just doing oneoperation but you have the ability tomake many many operations go over thesame thing over many many files sothey've really kind of designed this todo some pretty sophisticated things interms of renaming your files on thislist you can hit this Arrow to go up ordown and change the order of things andyou can also hit this trash can toremove these operations if you don'twant them if you accidentally hit thistrash can to remove all the operationsbefore you start you'll want to hit theplus sign to get something in here toget going if you're totally at a lossyou don't know what to do you have a fewoptions with some Factory presets let'sgo down and look we have an option hereon this one I can add a counter suffixor a counter prefix go ahead and add acounter suffix to this option so itfills in all these different optionstells me it has two digits the renamingoperation in place gives me a littlepreview down here and when I hit next Ican see that my files which originallywere all called empty and are calledempty with the number zero or number oneand number two all neatly laid out thatway and if I go ahead and run this letme go ahead and hit finish button herenow when I look down at my Clips they'veall been nicely renamed and it shows theactual name right on the clip itself soyou can go pretty deep in terms of whatyou're trying to accomplish here whetheryou have a bunch of files you want torename or a bunch of markers maybe orthe actual Clips themselves there's onemore thing I want to show you in thiswhole subject if we go back up to ourclip lips and down to where it functionsagain and go to our batch renaming go toour second operation screen if all ofthese options weren't enough the factthat we can choose the category in thetype and we can choose multiple categorytypes in terms of the renaming of theoptions you have a little check box thatsays Advanced editing if I click on thatguy it now gives me a whole host ofother options in terms of picking outwhat it is I'm trying to rename maybelooking for something in a range ofdifferent characters and here's where itgets really sophisticated as you look inthis option that says range to processand right now it's checked on the allyou have another option that says theregular expression this is somethingthat's buried in wavelab pretty deep ingeneral in terms of having thisprogramming language available where youcan go in here and you can pick allthese different variables differentpieces of metadata that maybe you wantto use to search something out the listgoes on and on in these options you canalso take this from and to options ifyou click on that then again you haveeither before a particular regularexpression so you can pick something outof the again all this various metadatayou're looking for and then end it withanother set of different metadata youcould spend a good long time justexploring everything they've given youin terms of how to find the things youwant to change and then performing theactual tasks that are available torename all this stuff so have a go atthat make a few of your files availablestart experimenting with the categoryand the types see how they look in yourpreview section and then you haveentered the world of batch renaming allright it's going to wrap it up for todayas always if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below gives you access toall the content on this channel in ordercategorized and it helps keep you up onwhat's happening what's coming what'sdeveloping what's new don't leaveyourself out of it hopefully that givesyou some idea of the batch renamingoptions in wavelab that you have threepaths to go through if you want to do ityou're either going to be dealing withfiles or you're going to be dealing withmarkers or you're going to be dealingwith Clips you have some idea now withthe category and the type is in theoperations screen you know how topreview what you're looking at so if youhave some things to rename or you justwant to have some fun experimenting anddevelop your skills that should give yousome tools as we continue our journeythrough all the different options inwavelab as always it's great to have youguys here I'll see you on the next video
